Whether you want a gentle day visiting a beautiful National Trust property, or tasting some local cider or wine on a farm visit, or maybe getting out and being active on the water or exploring the hills on an e-bike, there is so much to do in Somerset for all tastes and ages.  

 

Visit Somerset website is a good way to search for ideas, but below we've listed just a few local venues and activities that our guests have enjoyed in the past. Scroll down for photos!

Coleridge’s Cottage, Nether Stowey - National Trust

Visit the Grade II* listed 17th Century home of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, one of the smallest NT properties. Step into his life during his time in Somerset.  Gardens, shop and cream teas. Check the National Trust Website for details of opening and events.

 

Stowey Castle, Nether Stowey

A little (but steep) walk up Castle Street from the village and you’ll find Stowey Castle, a scheduled ancient monument.  The earthworks remains of a Norman motte-and-bailey castle, built in the 11th century. Great views from the top!

 

West Somerset Railway - Heritage Steam Train line

Take the train from Bishop’s Lydeard to Minehead for a day out on the sandy beaches of Minehead.  The train stops at various locations, some of which are convenient to visit other attractions. Check West Somerset Railway website for opening times and special events (winter timetable is limited).

 

Dunster Village & Dunster Castle (National Trust)

Picturesque fairytale village and medieval castle. There are many independent shops and cafe’s around the Old Yarn Market and of course the castle with it’s grounds. A beautiful place to explore. Dunster village holds various events throughout the year and it’s Christmas festival is a magical festive experience.

 

Cleve Abbey, Washford  (English Heritage)

Just outside Washford lies one of the undiscovered jewels of Somerset, providing a really fascinating day out. The Cistercian Abbey of Cleeve is one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in the country and is a haven of peace and tranquillity. Said to contain the finest cloister buildings in England, and some incredibly well preserved Tudor architecture. A 10 minute walk from the Steam Train Station at Washford.

Hestercombe House & Gardens, Hestercombe, Nr. Taunton.

Visit the beautiful joint work and designs of Gertrude Jekyl and Sir Edward Lutyens’ garden and house. There is a cafe and small garden nursery here too. Various events held through the year (see website) including a very popular Christmas Market.

 

Fyne Court, Broomfield - National Trust

Informal gardens and grounds of an old manor house which burnt down in the 19th century.  Walled garden, folly and arboretum, with cafe and some out door theatrical events in summer.

 

WWT Steart Marshes, Nr Bridgwater 

Steart Marshes is the first of WWT's working wetlands. This is wonderful example of a thriving nature reserve.  Spot all sorts of birdlife here from the hides and walkways.  It’s free to visit and is open all year. You can take dogs but ensure you keep to the dog-rules.

 

Watchet - The old fishing village and harbour

Places to visit include The Mineral Line, three museums, the Watchet War Memorial, the steam railway, the Hellwell Bay fossil beach and paddling pool, East Quay Arts Centre over looking the harbour has a cafe/bar with events throughout the year (see ‘Visit Watchet’ website). A good evening might be Fish & Chips watching the sun go down over the old harbour and a pint of something local at Pebbles Tavern!

Hauser & Wirth, Bruton

Former charming farmstead, with art galleries, restaurant, farm shop and beautiful gardens.  The gallery hosts a vibrant program of art exhibitions and is internationally renowned.  Bruton town is also an interesting place to stop off.

 

Fleet Air Arm Museum, Yeovil

Interesting day out showcasing the history of past and present Naval Aircraft, Some interactive experiences and viewing area of the busy military airfield.

 

Haynes Motor Museum, Sparkford, Yeovil

Uk’s largest collection of cars and bikes both old and new, displayed for a great day for enthusiasts.

 

Cheddar Gorge & Gough’s Cave

Spectacular limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, the site of Cheddar caves. The gorge leads down to the village of Cheddar (can be quite busy in peek times).  You can walk the gorge or the cliff walk.

 

Wookey Hole Caves

A full day out, Wookey Hole Caves have become a major family tourist attraction over the years. The spectacular caves are worth exploring, but there are many more ‘family’ attractions there too (see their website).

 

Boat trips to either Lundy Island or Steep Holm Island

Lundy Island can be reached by boat from Barnstable, and Steep Holm from Weston Super Mare. Both should be booked in advance.

 

Porlock Village & Porlock Weir

Pretty seaside village with harbour (at the weir), pubs, tea rooms and gift shops.

Lynton & Lynmouth

A little further a field, but the drive over the Exmoor coast road (A39) is stunning. Lynton & Lynmouth are two connected beautiful seaside towns set at the top and bottom of the dramatic Exmoor coastal cliffs. Ride the famous cliff railway between the two and explore the dramatic river gorge where the East Lyn meets the West Lyn. Shops, pubs, restaurants and teashops are plentiful.

 

Exmoor

Explore miles of open moorland and deep wooded valleys - The Quantocks, but bigger! Dulverton,, Exford, Dunkery Beacon are all popular places to visit.  See the “visit Exmoor” website for more information.

Torre Cider Farm,  Washford

Family run cider farm where you can do tours, see the animals, eat in their restaurant and buy their own deliciously quirky ciders in their farm shop. Check their website for opening and events.

 

Sheppy’s Cider Farm, Taunton

Located west of Taunton, Sheppy’s offer tours and tasting events, plus a farm shop full of local produce as well as a restaurant. Check their website for events and opening.

 

Oatley Vineyard, Cannington

Guided tours and tasting, or self guided, a beautiful informal and tranquil place to visit with a picnic to taste these award winning Somerset wines. Check their website for visiting information and booking.

 

Quantock Brewery, Bishops Lydeard

Tap Room, shop and events and festivals held through the year - visit their website for more information.

 

Thatcher’s Cider, Winscombe

One of the largest local cider producers but still a family business. They hold many tours, tasting and events, so check their website for details.
